One Month's Notice Competition for July - The Decisive Moment in Black & White

15-Jun  (to add "include the metadata" under the images must section.  Including metadata was already included in the 25-May post).

Eligibility criteria

Images must:
 - Be Black & White
 - Be single image only (not triptych) or multiple exposure
 - Have minimal post production - global changes such as contrast and clarity are ok,  removal of minor elements such as dust spots is ok, any cropping is ok
 - Not have major elements removed or added through cloning which is similar to documentary, photojournalism and travel limitations
 - Be captured after the topic was announced at 9pm on 23-May-2022.
 - Include the metadata which includes the capture date or otherwise members will be asked to confirm that their images were captured within the time constraints of the competition.  When exporting from Lightroom, or your software of choice, ensure include all metadata is selected.

To fit the intent of the brief, images should:
 - Have the decisive moment element resonating with the background to reinforce its inclusion in the overall scene
 - Have some element of spontaneity where elements of chance and patience come together rather than a constructed scene where the decisive moment is predictable

Sample images that fit the decisive moment brief nicely

Images below have a decisive moment but don't fit the brief well in regards to composition and interaction of the decisive moment with the existing scene, although they may make good street photography photos.

- the runner and Luna Park face don't resonate with each other.
- the balloon doesn't have any particular compositional merit
- The 3 statues has a slow shutter speed is is not really "a moment"
- There is nothing to relate the lady in the sun with the shady background

25-May

Our judge for the One Month’s Notice competition, Craig Wetjen, has advised the topic is ……The Decisive Moment, in Black & White.  The Decisive Moment is a concept made famous by Henri Cartier-Bresson and is generally used to describe a point in time - the moment.  Craig has provided reference to an article that argues The Decisive Moment is really about composition.  The article highlights that view and Craig will use it to assess our images.

Here is the link to the article > https://petapixel.com/the-decisive-moment/.

To help distil the essence of the article (which covers a number of points), and provide more direction to members, further clarification will be made available to members in coming days.  Craig was unable to attend our meeting in person on Monday to provide his input, so we will provide you with further assistance shortly.

One signifiant opportunity the topic provides is to utilise our learnings from competitions earlier this year, notably the B&W and local street photography competitions.  We all took on board the feedback from the judges and planned to use that feedback next time.  Well, here’s the next time and your opportunity to use those learnings.

Images for the One Month’s Competition are to be taken after 9pm last Monday when the topic was announced.  So no digging into your archives for old photos but don’t let that deter you as our One Month’s Notice competition last year was one of our most successful.  For this competition only, the number of entries allowed for each member will be adjusted to take into account the shorter timeframe available for printing images.  Members will be able to submit a maximum of 3 images, with a combination of a maximum of 2 digital images and 1 print, or 1 digital image and 2 prints.  You won’t be able to enter 3 digital images or 3 prints.

The images submitted must include the metadata that includes the capture date and members will be asked to confirm that their images were captured within the time constraints of the competition
